Possible Causes

No 24V power from HVAC system, Disconnected R or C wire at Nest base, Failed internal rechargeable battery in Nest, Blown low‑voltage fuse on furnace control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off power to the HVAC system before removing the thermostat from its base.

  • Check base power: Remove the Nest display and inspect that R and C wires are firmly connected. If only R is present, the Nest may not be charging reliably.
  • Test voltage: With power on and using a multimeter, measure between R and C at the Nest base. You should see ~24 VAC. If not, check the furnace control board fuse and transformer.
  • USB charging (if supported): Some Nest models can be temporarily charged via the micro‑USB/USB‑C port on the back. Connect to a USB charger for 1–2 hours, then reattach to the base.
  • Fuse inspection: At the furnace control board, replace a blown low‑voltage fuse with the same rating.
  • Replace thermostat: If proper 24V is present and the Nest will not power up even after USB charging, the internal battery or main board has likely failed and the thermostat should be replaced.
