Occupancy Sensor / Proximity Sensor Failure
Nest thermostat does not detect motion and does not wake up or follow occupancy schedule

Possible Causes
Obstructed Nest front sensor (covered or dirty), Nest installed in a location with little movement, Failed PIR motion sensor on main board, Eco/Auto‑Away settings misconfigured
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: No electrical work is needed for basic checks.
- Clean sensor window: Gently clean the front of the Nest with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust or smudges.
- Check settings: In the Nest app, verify that Home/Away Assist and motion‑based features are enabled.
- Observe behavior: Stand directly in front of the Nest and move your hand; the display should wake. If it does not, restart the thermostat.
- Relocation: If the Nest is in a hallway with little traffic, consider relocating it or relying more on phone‑based presence detection.
- Replace thermostat: If the PIR sensor never detects motion despite correct settings, the sensor may have failed and the Nest should be replaced.
