Nest
Overheating of Thermostat Electronics
Nest thermostat is hot to the touch or feels unusually warm
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Installed in direct sunlight or above heat source, Excessive backlight/always‑on display settings, Internal component failure causing heat buildup, High ambient temperature at wall cavity due to duct leakage
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Overheating can damage electronics but is usually not a fire hazard at low voltage. If the thermostat smells burnt, turn off HVAC power immediately.
- Check location: Ensure the Nest is not in direct sunlight, above a radiator, or on a wall with hot plumbing or ductwork behind it.
- Adjust display settings: Reduce display brightness and disable always‑on features in the Nest settings.
- Inspect wall cavity: Remove the Nest and feel inside the wall opening for hot air leaks from ducts. Seal gaps with appropriate materials.
- Monitor operation: After changes, monitor temperature and behavior. If the thermostat remains excessively hot or malfunctions, the internal electronics may be failing.
- Replace thermostat: A Nest that consistently overheats despite proper installation should be replaced.
