Possible Causes
Humidifier wired to wrong thermostat terminals, Humidifier feature disabled in thermostat installer settings, Incorrect 24V vs. powered humidifier configuration, Failed humidifier relay on thermostat or Payne control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power to the furnace/air handler before working on humidifier wiring.
- Verify humidifier type: Determine if you have a 24V controlled humidifier or one that uses its own power and only needs a dry contact.
- Check wiring: Ensure the humidifier is wired to the designated HUM or accessory terminals on the Payne control board or thermostat, per the installation manual.
- Enable in settings: In the thermostat installer menu, enable humidifier control and select the correct type (bypass, fan‑powered, steam) and control strategy.
- Test operation: Command humidity from the thermostat and listen for the humidifier solenoid or fan. If no response, test for 24V at the humidifier terminals when called.
- Replace relay or thermostat: If the thermostat is not sending a control signal despite correct configuration, the internal relay or the Payne board's HUM output may be faulty and require replacement.
