Possible Causes

Thermostat installed above radiator or heat source, Poor ventilation behind thermostat, Internal regulator overheating, High ambient temperature exceeding spec

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Do not operate the thermostat with the cover removed while powered. Risk of electric shock.

  • Step 1 – Check installation location:
    • Ensure the thermostat is not directly above radiators, towel rails, or other heat sources.
    • Move any heat-generating devices (e.g. TV, lamps) away from the thermostat.
  • Step 2 – Improve ventilation:
    • Ensure the back box is not completely sealed with insulation.
    • Provide some airflow around the thermostat.
  • Step 3 – Measure ambient temperature:
    • Use a separate thermometer to check room temperature.
    • If the room is within normal range but FE persists, internal components may be overheating.
  • Step 4 – Relocate thermostat:
    • If installation location is unsuitable, have a qualified electrician relocate the thermostat to an interior wall away from heat sources and drafts.
  • Step 5 – Replace unit if internal fault:
    • Persistent FE in a suitable location indicates a failing internal regulator or sensor.
    • Replace the Protherm smart thermostat main unit.
