Possible Causes

Shorted or open dehumidifier control wiring, Incorrect wiring to DHUM or dehumidifier terminals, Overload on dehumidifier relay output, Failed dehumidifier relay on thermostat or indoor board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power to the indoor unit before accessing control wiring.

Steps:

  • Identify dehumidifier wiring: Locate the DHUM or dehumidifier terminals on the Rheem thermostat and indoor control board. Trace the wires to the whole-house dehumidifier or to the air handler's dehumidification input.
  • Inspect for shorts: Look for bare conductors touching each other or metal surfaces. Repair any damaged insulation.
  • Verify wiring configuration: Confirm that the dehumidifier is wired according to Rheem's wiring diagram (dry contact vs powered input). Miswiring can overload the thermostat output.
  • Test operation: With power restored, call for dehumidification from the thermostat and listen for the dehumidifier relay click at the indoor unit. If the E11 code appears immediately, the output may be shorted or the relay failed.
  • If relay is suspected failed: A technician should test the DHUM output at the board and replace the thermostat or indoor control board if the relay is not functioning.
