Ruud
Compressor Short-Cycle Protection Delay
Thermostat shows 'Waiting' or 'Delay' and does not immediately start cooling or heating after a setpoint change
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Built-in minimum off-time delay in thermostat, Recent power interruption, Rapid user changes to mode or setpoint, Internal timer logic preventing compressor damage
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: No electrical work is required.
- Wait delay period: Most Ruud smart thermostats enforce a 3–5 minute delay between compressor cycles. Wait at least 5 minutes to see if the system starts.
- Avoid rapid changes: Do not repeatedly change modes or large setpoint swings within a few minutes; this can extend delays.
- Check system status: Ensure breakers are ON and the indoor unit is not in a lockout condition due to other faults.
- Configuration: In advanced settings, verify that compressor protection delay is set to a reasonable value (typically 3–5 minutes) and not excessively long.
