Stelpro
Short Cycling of Heating Output
Thermostat makes clicking noises very frequently (short cycling)
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Cycle rate set too high, Thermostat installed in drafty location, Oversized heater causing rapid temperature changes, Faulty temperature sensor causing jittery readings
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Software changes can be made with power on. Turn off power only if relocating the thermostat.
Steps to reduce short cycling:
- 1. Adjust cycle settings: In the thermostat menu, reduce the cycle rate or increase the minimum on/off time if these options are available.
- 2. Improve location: Move the thermostat away from drafts (doors, windows, vents) and away from direct heater airflow.
- 3. Check heater sizing: An oversized Stelpro heater can cause rapid temperature swings. Consider using multiple smaller heaters or adjusting wattage.
- 4. Verify sensor stability: Watch the displayed room temperature; if it jumps rapidly by more than 0.5°C, the sensor may be faulty. In that case, replace the thermostat.
- 5. Enable adaptive control: Use any available adaptive or PID control modes to smooth cycling.
Note: Some clicking is normal, but very frequent cycling can reduce heater life and comfort.
