Possible Causes
Excessive connected load near maximum rating, Loose line/load terminals causing resistive heating, Thermostat installed in small unventilated box, Internal triac/relay failing
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power at the breaker before inspecting the thermostat or wiring. Overheated components can cause burns.
Steps to address overheating:
- 1. Measure load: Add up the wattage of all Stelpro heaters controlled by the thermostat and compare with the thermostat's maximum rating. Reduce load if near or above the limit.
- 2. Inspect terminals: With power OFF, remove the thermostat and check that all terminal screws are tight and that there is no discoloration or melting around the terminals.
- 3. Check wall box size: Ensure the thermostat is installed in an approved electrical box with adequate space for wiring and airflow.
- 4. Monitor temperature: After correcting any issues, restore power and monitor the thermostat temperature during operation. It should be warm but not hot.
- 5. Replace thermostat: If overheating persists or you see signs of internal damage, replace the thermostat and consider using a remote relay for high loads.
Warning: Persistent overheating is a fire risk. Do not ignore this symptom.
