Temperature Reading Inaccurate
Thermostat shows very different temperature from other rooms or from a reference thermometer
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Thermostat installed in draft, sun, or near heat source, Internal sensor drift, Wall cavity air leaking through hole behind thermostat, Incorrect temperature offset setting
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Power-off is only needed if sealing the wall or relocating the thermostat.
Steps to correct inaccurate readings:
- 1. Compare readings: Place a reliable thermometer near the thermostat and compare readings over 15–20 minutes.
- 2. Seal wall opening: Remove the thermostat (power OFF) and seal large gaps in the wall box or drywall opening with non-flammable insulation or foam to prevent wall cavity drafts.
- 3. Relocate if necessary: Move the thermostat away from direct sunlight, exterior walls, or heat sources.
- 4. Adjust offset: Use the thermostat menu to apply a temperature offset so the displayed value matches the reference thermometer.
- 5. Replace thermostat: If the reading remains unstable or far off even after offset and proper placement, the internal sensor may be defective. Replace the thermostat.
Note: Allow time for temperatures to stabilize after any changes before re-evaluating.
