Possible Causes
Incorrect system type selected in setup (heat pump vs conventional), Misassigned thermostat terminals in app, Incompatible multi-stage configuration
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power to the HVAC system before changing wiring.
- Review wiring: Remove the thermostat and compare each wire color and terminal to the installation guide for your specific Kasa thermostat model.
- Check system type: In the Kasa app, go to Device Settings > System Type (wording may vary) and confirm you selected the correct type: conventional furnace/AC or heat pump, and correct number of stages.
- Match terminals: Ensure that wires connected to Y, W, G, O/B, AUX, etc., match the configuration selected in the app. Correct any mismatches.
- Re-run setup wizard: Use the Kasa app to re-run the installation wizard so it can auto-detect wiring and system type where supported.
- Test modes: After configuration, test Heat, Cool, and Fan modes individually to confirm proper operation.
