Possible Causes
Onboard temperature sensor out of range, Corrupted configuration data, Firmware glitch, Main control PCB fault
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power to the thermostat at the HVAC system switch or circuit breaker before removing it from the wall.
Steps to try:
- Reboot the thermostat: Turn the HVAC breaker off for 60 seconds, then back on. Wait 3–5 minutes to see if E0 clears.
- Factory reset: From the Kasa app, open the thermostat device > Settings > Device Info > Factory Reset (wording may vary). Reconfigure Wi‑Fi and schedules and check if the error returns.
- Check for extreme conditions: Ensure the thermostat is not installed in direct sunlight, above a heat register, or on an exterior wall that is very hot or cold. These can push the internal sensor out of its calibrated range.
- Update firmware: In the Kasa app, check for a firmware update for the thermostat and install it if available.
- If E0 persists: The internal sensor or main control board is likely defective. Replacement of the thermostat assembly is typically required.
