Possible Causes
Open or shorted Trane ComfortLink II communication bus wiring, Miswired R/C/Y1/Y2/G terminals, Failed thermostat communication module, Blown low-voltage fuse on Trane air handler or outdoor unit control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power to the air handler/furnace and outdoor unit at the breakers before touching any thermostat or control wiring.
- Step 1 – Reboot the thermostat: Remove the thermostat from its wall sub-base (if model allows) for 30 seconds, then reattach. On some Trane smart thermostats, use the Settings > Reboot option.
- Step 2 – Check HVAC power: Confirm the indoor unit and outdoor unit breakers are ON. Verify the service switch at the air handler/furnace is ON.
- Step 3 – Inspect low-voltage fuse: Open the blower compartment on the Trane air handler/furnace and locate the 3–5A low-voltage blade fuse on the control board. If blown, replace with the same rating only. If it blows again, stop and call a technician.
- Step 4 – Inspect thermostat wiring: With power still OFF, remove the thermostat from the wall and verify that R, C, Y1, Y2, G, W1, W2, and data/communication terminals (if ComfortLink II) are firmly seated and not shorted. Look for bare copper touching other terminals.
- Step 5 – Check communication cable: For ComfortLink II systems, inspect the 2- or 4-wire communication cable between thermostat, indoor unit, and outdoor unit. Repair any damaged insulation and tighten all terminal screws.
- Step 6 – Restore power and test: Turn power back on and wait 3–5 minutes for the thermostat to re-establish communication. If E0 persists, the thermostat communication module or a system control board may be defective and professional diagnosis is recommended.
