Possible Causes
Failed internal power regulator on thermostat, Corrupted firmware, Loose connection between thermostat and wall sub-base, Voltage outside thermostat operating range from Trane control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power to the HVAC system before removing the thermostat from the wall.
- Step 1 – Remove and reseat: Gently pull the thermostat off its sub-base, inspect the pins and contacts for corrosion or bent pins, then firmly reseat it.
- Step 2 – Check supply voltage: With a multimeter and power ON, measure between R and C at the thermostat. It should be around 24 VAC. If significantly low or high, there may be an issue with the Trane control transformer or wiring.
- Step 3 – Firmware update: If the thermostat is Wi‑Fi enabled, connect it to the network and check for firmware updates in the settings menu. Apply any available updates.
- Step 4 – Factory reset: Back up any schedules, then perform a factory reset from the settings menu. Reconfigure the system type and Wi‑Fi.
- Step 5 – If E5 persists: The thermostat’s internal electronics are likely defective. Replacement is recommended.
