How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety warning: Electric auxiliary heat can draw high current. Turn off power at the breaker before servicing.
- Step 1 – Verify system type: Confirm the system is a heat pump with auxiliary heat and that the thermostat is configured accordingly.
- Step 2 – Inspect W2/AUX wiring: At the thermostat and indoor unit, check the W2/AUX wire for secure connections and signs of shorting.
- Step 3 – Check heat kit configuration: On the Trane air handler, verify dip switch or jumper settings for the installed electric heat kit match the thermostat configuration.
- Step 4 – Test auxiliary output: In installer test mode, command auxiliary heat ON and measure voltage between R and W2/AUX at the thermostat. If no output and wiring is good, the thermostat output may be faulty.
- Step 5 – If wiring and configuration are correct: Have a technician test the indoor control board and heat relays for faults.
