Possible Causes
Failed internal temperature sensor in thermostat, Faulty remote indoor sensor (if used), Shorted or open sensor wiring, Thermostat exposed to abnormal heat or cold
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Note: Many Trane smart thermostats use an internal sensor; some support remote indoor sensors.
- Step 1 – Compare temperatures: Use a reliable room thermometer placed near the thermostat. If the thermostat reading is off by more than 3–4°F, suspect a sensor issue.
- Step 2 – Check remote sensor (if installed): If a wired remote sensor is used, inspect its wiring and terminals at the thermostat or indoor board. Tighten connections and repair any damaged cable.
- Step 3 – Disable remote sensor: In installer setup, temporarily disable the remote sensor and force the thermostat to use its internal sensor. If E7 clears, the remote sensor is likely faulty.
- Step 4 – Reboot thermostat: Power cycle the thermostat and HVAC system to clear transient faults.
- Step 5 – If internal sensor is bad: The thermostat must typically be replaced; the internal sensor is not field-serviceable.
