Possible Causes
Weak excitation from AVR, Worn brushes or slip rings (if brush type alternator), Loose stator connections, Shorted alternator windings
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect from load and utility. Only qualified personnel should work inside the alternator terminal box.
- Check AVR supply and sensing: Ensure the AVR is receiving correct supply voltage and that sensing leads are firmly connected.
- Inspect brushes and slip rings: On brush‑type Aksa alternators, check brush length and spring tension. Clean dirty slip rings with fine abrasive cloth. Replace worn brushes.
- Check stator and rotor connections: Tighten all terminal bolts and inspect for burnt or discolored insulation.
- Test excitation circuit: Measure field voltage and resistance according to the alternator manual. If field is open or shorted, the rotor may need replacement.
- AVR replacement: If all wiring and alternator components test good, replace the AVR with the correct part and retest.
