Possible Causes

Low coolant level (liquid-cooled models), Blocked cooling air intake or exhaust, Failed cooling fan, Faulty temperature sensor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn the generator OFF, disconnect the battery, and allow the engine to cool completely before opening any panels or coolant caps.

  • Inspect air flow: On air-cooled All Power America standby generators, remove debris, leaves, or nests from the intake and exhaust grilles. Ensure at least the manufacturer-recommended clearance around the enclosure for proper ventilation.
  • Check cooling fan: With the engine off, visually inspect the flywheel fan or electric cooling fan. Spin it by hand to confirm it turns freely. If the fan blades are broken or the motor is seized, replace the cooling fan assembly.
  • Check coolant (if liquid-cooled): Remove the radiator cap only when the engine is cold. Top up with the specified coolant mixture. Inspect hoses and the radiator for leaks.
  • Inspect temperature sensor: Locate the engine temperature sensor on the cylinder head or coolant passage. Check the connector for corrosion and ensure it is firmly seated. If the sensor body is cracked or resistance is out of specification, replace the temperature sensor.
  • Clean engine fins: On air-cooled engines, remove the shrouds and clean dirt from the cylinder cooling fins with compressed air.
  • Reset and test: Reconnect the battery, clear the E04 code if your controller supports it, and run the generator under light load while monitoring temperature.
