Possible Causes
Misadjusted or failing AVR, Loose sensing wires to AVR, Incorrect engine speed (governor out of adjustment), Failing alternator stator
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the generator and open the main breaker before making adjustments. Use a true-RMS multimeter rated for the generator voltage.
- Verify engine speed: Start the generator in MANUAL with no load and measure frequency at an outlet or output lugs. It should be near 60 Hz (or 50 Hz depending on model). If frequency is off, adjust the mechanical governor linkage per the All Power America service procedure until the correct speed is reached.
- Inspect AVR connections: With power off, remove the AVR cover and check that all sensing and excitation wires are firmly connected and not burned. Tighten any loose screws.
- Adjust AVR (if adjustable): Some AVRs have a small potentiometer labeled VOLT or V. With the generator running and no load, carefully adjust the pot with an insulated screwdriver while monitoring output voltage until it reaches the specified value (e.g., 120/240 V).
- Replace AVR if unstable: If voltage fluctuates widely or cannot be set within range, replace the AVR with the correct All Power America replacement.
