Possible Causes
Incorrect neutral-ground bonding at transfer switch, Ground fault in load wiring, Damaged neutral sensing wire to controller, Internal alternator insulation failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Lock out both utility and generator sources at the transfer switch. Use a qualified electrician for ground/neutral diagnostics.
- Verify bonding configuration: Confirm that the All Power America generator and ATS are wired according to the installation manual regarding neutral-ground bonding. Incorrect bonding can trigger E18.
- Inspect load circuits: Check for damaged cables, water intrusion, or burned insulation in the circuits fed by the generator. Repair any faults.
- Check neutral sensing lead: Locate the neutral sensing wire from the alternator or output lugs to the controller. Ensure it is intact and properly connected.
- Insulation test: With the generator isolated, perform an insulation resistance test (megger) on the alternator windings to ground. Low resistance indicates internal faults requiring alternator repair or replacement.
