Possible Causes
Loose engine mounting bolts, Worn connecting rod bearings, Loose exhaust heat shield, Damaged flywheel key
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the generator, disconnect the battery, and allow the engine to cool. Do not run the engine with covers removed unless necessary for diagnosis.
- Check mounting hardware: Inspect engine mounting bolts to the base frame and tighten to specification. Check that the alternator mounting bolts are also secure.
- Inspect exhaust system: Wiggle the muffler, exhaust pipe, and heat shields. Tighten loose fasteners and replace broken brackets.
- Listen for internal knock: If a deep metallic knock persists at all speeds, internal engine wear (rod bearings, piston slap) may be present. Continued operation can cause catastrophic failure.
- Professional service: For suspected internal engine damage, contact an authorized All Power America service center for teardown and repair.
