Possible Causes
Blocked air intake or exhaust louvers, Failed cooling fan or fan belt (if belt-driven), Low engine oil level causing overheating, Faulty engine temperature switch or sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn the system OFF and allow the engine to cool completely before inspection.
- Check airflow: Inspect intake and exhaust louvers on the Briggs & Stratton enclosure for leaves, snow, or debris. Clear all obstructions and maintain required clearance around the unit.
- Inspect cooling fan: Open the enclosure and verify the engine-mounted cooling fan is intact and free of debris. On belt-driven fans, check belt tension and condition; replace if cracked or loose.
- Verify oil level: Low oil can increase engine temperature. Check and top off with the recommended oil.
- Temperature switch/sensor: Locate the engine temperature switch or sensor. Inspect wiring for damage. If the engine is not actually overheating (normal to the touch, no smell), but HET persists, the sensor may be faulty and require replacement.
- Clear the code: After correcting the cause, cycle the controller to OFF then AUTO and run a test cycle while monitoring temperature.
