Possible Causes

Failed voltage regulator (AVR), Loose or corroded stator output connections, Worn brushes or slip rings (if equipped), Shorted stator windings

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF the generator and utility main breakers. Lock out and tag out if possible. High voltage is present inside the generator enclosure.

  • Visual inspection: Remove the generator access panel. Inspect the alternator wiring harness, terminal block, and neutral connections for loose screws, discoloration, or burned insulation. Tighten any loose terminals.
  • Check voltage regulator connections: Locate the Briggs & Stratton voltage regulator module mounted near the alternator. Ensure its multi-pin connector is fully seated and free of corrosion. Reseat the connector several times to clean contacts.
  • Measure output: With a qualified person and proper meter, start the generator in MANUAL with the main breaker OFF. Measure line-to-line and line-to-neutral voltage at the generator output lugs. If voltage is very low or unstable, the AVR or stator may be faulty.
  • Inspect brushes/slip rings (if applicable): On models with brush-type alternators, inspect brushes for wear and ensure they move freely in their holders. Replace worn brushes and clean slip rings with non-metallic abrasive.
  • Clear the code: After repairs, cycle the controller to OFF then AUTO, and test under load. If LOV persists, professional alternator testing is recommended.
