Possible Causes
Loose engine or alternator mounting bolts, Damaged muffler or exhaust flex pipe, Internal engine damage (rod knock), Loose cooling fan or flywheel
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Keep clear of moving parts and hot exhaust. Turn controller to OFF before tightening hardware.
- Inspect mounts: Check engine and alternator mounting bolts to the base frame. Tighten to Briggs & Stratton torque specifications.
- Exhaust system: Inspect the muffler, exhaust manifold, and flex pipe for cracks or broken hangers. Replace damaged components.
- Fan and flywheel: With engine off, spin the cooling fan by hand and check for wobble. Ensure flywheel nut is tight and key is intact.
- Internal knock: A deep metallic knock that changes with load may indicate internal engine damage. Shut down and contact a Briggs & Stratton service dealer.
