Possible Causes
Automatic transfer switch (ATS) control board failure, Stuck or welded ATS contactor, Incorrect wiring between generator and ATS, Utility sense circuit misreading status
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF both utility and generator main breakers. Only qualified electricians should work inside the ATS.
- Verify generator output: Confirm correct voltage at the generator output lugs while running in MANUAL.
- Check ATS control signals: Inspect the low-voltage control harness between the generator controller and ATS. Ensure connectors are fully seated and not damaged.
- Manually operate contactor (if allowed): Some ATS units allow manual operation of the contactor for testing. Follow the Briggs & Stratton ATS manual to test movement. If the contactor is stuck, the ATS contactor assembly may need replacement.
- Inspect ATS board: Look for burned traces or components on the ATS control board. Replace with the correct Briggs & Stratton board if damaged.
