Possible Causes
Dirty carburetor idle and main circuits, Governor linkage sticking, Vacuum leak at intake manifold, Incorrect fuel pressure or composition
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Keep hands and tools away from moving linkage while running.
- Air filter: Replace a dirty air filter to ensure proper airflow.
- Carburetor cleaning: Add approved fuel system cleaner for NG/LP (if applicable) and, if needed, remove and clean the carburetor jets and passages.
- Governor linkage: Clean and ensure free movement of the governor arm and springs. Do not bend or alter springs beyond factory settings.
- Vacuum leaks: Spray a small amount of carb cleaner around the intake manifold gasket while running; a change in speed indicates a leak. Replace the gasket if leaking.
