Possible Causes
Generator undersized for connected loads, Weak engine due to restricted fuel supply, Failing voltage regulator, Loose neutral or phase connections in ATS
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Use proper PPE when working in live panels. Consider hiring a licensed electrician.
- Load assessment: Identify large loads (AC compressors, well pumps, electric ranges) that start simultaneously. Stagger their operation or install Briggs & Stratton load-shed modules to manage demand.
- Fuel supply check: Have a gas technician verify that inlet pressure remains within spec when the generator is fully loaded.
- Inspect wiring: Tighten all lugs in the generator output terminal block and ATS, especially neutrals.
- Test AVR: If voltage drops excessively and recovers slowly, the AVR may be weak. Replace with a Briggs & Stratton voltage regulator if confirmed faulty.
