Immediate shutdown with SHORT CIRCUIT or FAULT CURRENT error when generator attempts to pick up load.

Safety first: Turn OFF the generator and lock out the main breaker. Do not attempt to restart until the short is located and corrected.

• Visual inspection: Inspect the output lugs and cables inside the generator for melted insulation, loose strands, or signs of arcing.
• Check transfer switch: With utility power off and verified, inspect the transfer switch for burned contacts or loose connections.
• Isolate loads: A qualified person can disconnect generator output from the transfer switch and test the generator alone to determine if the fault is in the alternator or downstream wiring.

When to call a technician: Short circuit diagnosis requires insulation resistance testing and possibly alternator disassembly. A technician should perform these tests and replace damaged cables, breakers, or alternator components.
