Generator runs but shuts down with OVER VOLTAGE fault; lights in the home may briefly brighten during transfer.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Place the generator in OFF and open the main line circuit breaker to isolate the generator from the home. Do not run the unit under load until voltage is corrected.
- Inspect wiring: Open the alternator access panel and inspect the AVR harness and stator leads for loose connections, burnt insulation, or discoloration.
- Check engine speed: Visually confirm that the throttle linkage and governor arm are intact and not binding. Do not adjust governor springs without proper tools and specifications.
- Measure output (qualified persons only): Using a true RMS meter, verify line-to-line and line-to-neutral voltages during a manual test. If voltage exceeds specification, shut down immediately.
- Reset controller: Clear the fault and attempt a no-load test. If OVER VOLTAGE returns, suspect the AVR or control board.
When to call a technician: Overvoltage can damage household electronics. A technician should test and, if necessary, replace the Centurion AVR and verify proper governor adjustment.
