Safety Warning

This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.

If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.

Possible Causes

Uneven distribution of loads across phases, Loose phase conductor at generator or transfer switch, Faulty AVR sensing on one phase, Damaged stator winding on one phase

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF the generator and lock out the main breaker. Only qualified persons should work inside panels.

  • Inspect terminations: Check all phase conductors (L1, L2, L3) at the generator output lugs and transfer switch for tightness and discoloration.
  • Measure voltages: Using a meter, compare phase-to-phase and phase-to-neutral voltages. Significant differences indicate a problem.
  • Balance loads: Have an electrician redistribute branch circuits to balance current draw across phases.

When to call a technician: If imbalance persists with balanced loads, a technician should test the stator windings and AVR sensing circuits and replace damaged components.
