Possible Causes

Engine oil level low, faulty oil pressure switch, damaged oil pressure wiring harness, incorrect oil viscosity causing low pressure at start

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn the controller to OFF, open the generator AC breaker, and wait for all moving parts to stop. Allow the engine to cool before checking oil.

  • Check oil level: Remove the dipstick and verify oil level is between the FULL and ADD marks. Top up with the Champion-recommended oil type and viscosity (often 5W-30 synthetic for many standby models) if low.
  • Inspect for leaks: Look around the oil filter, drain plug, and crankcase gasket for signs of oil leakage. Tighten the oil filter and drain plug if seeping is observed, but do not overtighten.
  • Reset and test: After correcting oil level, clear the fault on the controller (usually by pressing STOP/RESET) and attempt a manual start. Observe the oil pressure indicator if available.
  • Check oil pressure switch wiring: Locate the oil pressure switch on the engine block (typically near the oil filter). Ensure the connector is fully seated and the wires are not damaged or pinched.
  • Test oil pressure switch (advanced): With the engine off and battery disconnected, unplug the switch and test continuity with a multimeter according to the Champion service manual. Replace the switch if it does not meet specifications.

If E1 persists with correct oil level and a known-good switch, internal engine oil pressure problems may exist. Do not continue to run the unit; contact a Champion-authorized technician.
