Possible Causes
Failed magnetic pickup sensor, damaged sensor wiring, excessive gap between sensor and flywheel, loose flywheel ring gear
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn the controller to OFF, open the generator AC breaker, disconnect the battery, and allow the engine to cool.
- Locate speed sensor: On many Champion standby engines, the speed sensor (magnetic pickup) is mounted near the flywheel or crankshaft. Refer to the service manual for exact location.
- Inspect wiring: Check the sensor harness for chafing, cuts, or oil contamination. Ensure the connector at the sensor and at the controller is fully seated.
- Check sensor gap: If accessible, verify the air gap between the sensor tip and the flywheel teeth is within Champion's specified range (often around 0.5–1.0 mm). Adjust if the mounting bracket allows.
- Clean sensor tip: Wipe off metal shavings or debris from the sensor tip with a clean cloth.
- Replace sensor if needed: If E11 persists and RPM readings are erratic or zero, replace the engine speed sensor with a Champion-approved part.
Improper sensor installation can cause misfires or shutdowns; follow torque and gap specifications exactly.
