Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn controller to OFF, open the generator AC breaker, and shut off the gas supply at the manual shutoff valve. Ventilate the area if you smell gas.
- Inspect air intake: Ensure the air filter is clean and the intake path is unobstructed. Replace a dirty filter with a Champion-approved element.
- Check for liquid fuel in airbox: Remove the air filter and look for pooled fuel in the airbox or mixer. If present, the regulator may be leaking; do not run the unit.
- Verify gas pressure (technician): A licensed gas technician should measure inlet and outlet pressure at the Champion fuel regulator to ensure it meets specifications.
- Inspect regulator vent: Make sure the regulator vent is not blocked by insects, dirt, or ice.
- Replace faulty regulator: If the regulator is stuck open or leaking, replace it with the correct Champion fuel regulator assembly.
Running with an overly rich mixture can foul plugs and damage the engine; correct the cause before further operation.
