Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn the controller to OFF and open the generator AC breaker. Working with gas systems can be hazardous; if you smell gas, evacuate the area and contact your gas supplier or emergency services.
- Check gas supply valves: Verify that the manual gas shutoff valve at the generator and at the gas meter or LP tank are fully open.
- Confirm fuel source: For LP systems, check that the tank has adequate fuel (typically above 30% for reliable operation). For natural gas, confirm with your gas utility that supply pressure is within Champion's specified range.
- Inspect fuel line: Look for kinks, damage, or ice buildup (in cold climates) on the flexible fuel line to the generator. Do not attempt to repair gas piping yourself.
- Check generator-mounted regulator: Visually inspect the Champion fuel regulator on the generator for signs of contamination, icing, or physical damage. Ensure vent openings are not blocked.
- Clean or replace fuel filter: If your model includes an inline fuel filter, shut off gas supply, relieve pressure, and replace the filter following the service manual.
- Reset and test: After restoring proper fuel supply, clear the E3 code and attempt a manual start. If the engine still will not start, stop cranking to avoid flooding and contact a technician.
Do not disassemble gas regulators or piping unless you are a licensed gas technician. Incorrect work can cause fire or explosion.
