Controller displays E8, generator shuts down and may show abnormal voltage readings
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Overvoltage can damage appliances. Immediately set the controller to OFF, open the generator main breaker, and disconnect the battery negative cable.
- Inspect sensing wires: Locate the small-gauge voltage sensing wires from the alternator to the controller/AVR. Ensure all connectors are tight and not corroded.
- Check neutral and ground connections: Verify that the neutral bus and ground connections inside the generator are tight and free of discoloration or overheating.
- Look for aftermarket modifications: Remove any non-Champion voltage boosters or add-on devices that may interfere with regulation.
- Replace AVR if necessary: If wiring is intact and E8 recurs, the AVR is likely defective. Follow the service manual to remove the alternator end cover, disconnect the AVR, and install a Champion-approved replacement.
- Verify output with meter: After repair, have a technician verify line-to-line and line-to-neutral voltages under load with a true-RMS meter before reconnecting to the home.
Do not operate the generator with known overvoltage conditions; this can destroy sensitive electronics in your home.
