Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: This fault involves both utility and generator power. Only work inside the transfer switch or main service panel if you are qualified. Turn the generator controller to OFF and lock out the main utility breaker if you will be opening panels.
- Check controller mode: Ensure the generator controller is in AUTO mode and not OFF or MANUAL.
- Inspect low-voltage control cable: Follow the multi-conductor control cable between the Champion ATS and the generator. Look for cuts, rodent damage, or pulled connectors.
- Verify sense wiring at generator: With all power off, open the generator control compartment and confirm that the utility sense wires are landed on the correct terminals per the Champion wiring diagram.
- Verify sense wiring at ATS: In the ATS, check that the same cable is correctly terminated on the control board terminals and that no wires are loose.
- Simulate outage (qualified only): A technician can open the main utility breaker to simulate a power failure and observe whether the generator receives a start signal.
If wiring is correct and intact, the ATS control board or generator controller may be defective and require replacement.
