Possible Causes
Controller not in AUTO mode, misconfigured exercise/auto-start settings, open control wiring to ATS, failed ATS start relay
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Only qualified persons should simulate outages by operating main breakers. Keep the generator in a safe state while testing.
- Verify AUTO mode: Confirm the controller is set to AUTO and no lockout conditions are active.
- Check event log: Review the controller event history (if available) for missed start commands or faults.
- Inspect control cable: Check the low-voltage cable between generator and ATS for damage or loose connections.
- Simulate outage (technician): With a technician present, open the main utility breaker to see if the ATS sends a start signal to the generator.
If the generator never receives a start signal, the ATS control board or wiring is suspect.
