Possible Causes

Clogged primary fuel filter, Failing electric fuel lift pump, Restricted gas regulator or low gas inlet pressure, Air leaks on fuel suction line

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn the generator to OFF and close the fuel supply valve before opening any fuel connections. Ventilate the area and avoid open flames or sparks.

  • Check fuel source: For natural gas/LPG units, verify inlet gas pressure at the generator gas train using a manometer (compare to Cummins spec on the data plate). Ensure upstream gas shutoff valves are fully open and that other gas appliances are not starving the line.
  • Inspect fuel filters: Locate the Cummins fuel filter/water separator on diesel units. If the bowl is dirty or filter is old, replace it with the correct Cummins filter element. Prime the system using the hand primer or electric priming function.
  • Check for suction leaks: Inspect flexible fuel hoses, clamps, and fittings from the tank to the engine-mounted lift pump. Tighten loose clamps and replace cracked hoses.
  • Test fuel lift pump: With the controller in MANUAL and crank disabled (if possible), listen/feel for the electric lift pump running. If silent, check its fuse and relay. Replace the lift pump if it does not run with proper voltage applied.
  • Reset and test: After corrections, clear the fault on the controller and run the generator under light load while monitoring for reoccurrence.
