Possible Causes
Clogged high-pressure fuel filter, Weak high-pressure fuel pump, Leaking injector or fuel rail, Faulty fuel rail pressure sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: High-pressure common rail fuel systems operate at extremely high pressures. Do not loosen high-pressure lines while running. Disable automatic start and allow the engine to cool.
- Replace fuel filters: If due or contaminated, replace both primary and secondary Cummins fuel filters. Prime the system according to the service manual.
- Inspect for leaks: Look for wetness around injectors, high-pressure lines, and the fuel rail. Any visible leak on the high-pressure side requires professional service; do not attempt to tighten or repair without proper training.
- Check low-pressure supply: Ensure the lift pump is delivering adequate fuel to the high-pressure pump. Low inlet pressure can cause rail pressure faults.
- Sensor and wiring: Inspect the fuel rail pressure sensor connector and harness. If rail pressure readings are erratic but mechanical checks are normal, the sensor may be faulty.
- Reset and monitor: Clear the fault and run under load. Persistent rail pressure faults should be addressed by a Cummins technician with diagnostic tools.
