Possible Causes
Connected load exceeds generator rating, Short circuit or ground fault on load side, Stuck or failed load contactor, Incorrect breaker sizing
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Ensure the transfer switch is open and the generator is isolated from the building load. Disable automatic start.
- Inspect loads: Identify recent changes in connected equipment. Large motors, HVAC units, or welders can cause overcurrent. Reduce or stagger starting of large loads.
- Check for faults: Have a qualified electrician test downstream circuits for shorts or ground faults.
- Breaker and contactor: Inspect the generator main breaker and any internal contactors for signs of overheating or mechanical damage. Replace if contacts are burned or the mechanism is stiff.
- Reset: After resolving load issues, clear the fault and gradually reapply load while monitoring current on each phase.
