Possible Causes
Low coolant level (liquid‑cooled models), Blocked air intake or cooling fins (air‑cooled models), Failed engine cooling fan or fan belt, Faulty engine temperature sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the generator, disconnect battery negative, and allow the engine to cool completely. Never open a hot radiator cap.
- Inspect airflow: Ensure the generator enclosure louvers and intake/exhaust vents are not blocked by debris, vegetation, snow, or stored items. Clear at least 3 feet of clearance around the unit.
- Clean cooling fins: On air‑cooled DuroMax standby units, remove the side panels per the manual and blow compressed air through the cylinder head and stator cooling fins. Brush off heavy dirt and insect nests.
- Check coolant (liquid‑cooled): Verify coolant level in the radiator and overflow bottle. Top up with the recommended coolant mix. Inspect hoses, water pump, and radiator for leaks.
- Inspect cooling fan and belt: Confirm the engine cooling fan spins freely and the belt (if used) is tight and not cracked or glazed. Replace a worn belt and ensure proper tension.
- Test temperature sensor: Locate the engine temperature sensor on the cylinder head or thermostat housing. Check the connector for corrosion. If E02 persists and the engine is not actually overheating, the sensor may be faulty and should be replaced.
- Persistent overheating: If the unit overheats again after cleaning and fluid checks, stop using it and have a technician perform a full cooling system pressure test and thermostat inspection.
