Possible Causes

Excessive electrical load, Clogged air filter or restricted intake, Fuel starvation due to clogged carburetor jets, Weak ignition coil or spark plug misfire

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Disconnect all loads from the generator output breakers before troubleshooting. Turn OFF the unit and disconnect battery negative.

  • Reduce load: Verify that the total connected load does not exceed the standby generator's rated continuous wattage. Large motor loads (AC compressors, well pumps) should be sequenced or managed with an automatic load‑shedding module.
  • Check air filter: Open the air filter housing and inspect the element. If dirty or oil‑soaked, replace with a genuine DuroMax air filter.
  • Inspect spark plug: Remove the spark plug(s), check gap, and look for heavy carbon or oil fouling. Clean or replace with the specified plug type and gap.
  • Clean carburetor (basic): Shut off fuel, remove the carburetor bowl, and clean the main jet and bowl with carburetor cleaner. Reassemble with a new bowl gasket if needed.
  • Test run with light load: Start the generator with no load, let it warm up, then add a small load (e.g., a few lights). If E05 no longer appears, the issue was likely overload or restriction. If it persists, a technician should check fuel pressure, governor settings, and ignition system.
