Possible Causes
Weak or discharged battery, Faulty starter solenoid, Failed starter motor, Loose or corroded battery cables
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Ensure the generator is in OFF mode and all AC breakers are OFF before working on the starting system.
- Check battery voltage: Use a multimeter at the battery terminals. A fully charged 12V battery should read about 12.6V. If below 12.0V, charge the battery or replace it if it will not hold a charge.
- Inspect battery connections: Clean corrosion from battery posts and cable terminals with a wire brush. Tighten all connections, including the ground cable to the frame.
- Listen for solenoid click: Attempt a start while listening near the starter. A click with no crank suggests a bad starter motor or weak battery. No click suggests a faulty solenoid or control wiring.
- Bypass test (advanced): With extreme caution, briefly jump the large battery terminal to the starter terminal on the solenoid using an insulated tool. If the starter spins, the solenoid or control circuit is faulty. If it does not, the starter motor is likely bad. If you are not experienced with electrical work, have a technician perform this test.
- Replace faulty components: Install a new DuroMax‑compatible starter solenoid or starter motor as needed, ensuring correct wiring and mounting.
