Possible Causes
Failing AVR, Shorted stator winding, High resistance connection at alternator output lugs, Excessive load beyond rated capacity
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect all loads, open the main breaker, and shut down the generator. Disconnect battery negative before opening panels.
- Measure no‑load voltage: Start the generator with no load and measure output. If voltage is normal with no load but drops severely under small load, suspect a weak AVR or stator issue.
- Inspect output lugs: Tighten all output terminal bolts and check for heat discoloration or melted insulation. Clean and re‑terminate any overheated connections.
- Check for overload: Confirm that the connected load does not exceed the generator's continuous rating. Remove large motor loads and retest.
- Replace AVR: If wiring and load are correct but voltage remains low or unstable, replace the AVR with a DuroMax‑approved unit.
- Stator testing: If a new AVR does not fix the problem, a stator winding may be shorted. This requires resistance and insulation testing by a qualified technician and likely stator replacement.
