Possible Causes

Connected load exceeds generator rating, Short circuit in load wiring, Faulty main breaker not tripping correctly, Internal alternator short causing high current

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Open the generator main breaker and all downstream breakers. Turn OFF the generator and disconnect battery negative.

  • Isolate loads: Disconnect all branch circuits from the ATS or subpanel fed by the generator. Reset the generator and start it with no load to confirm it runs without E11.
  • Add loads gradually: Reconnect and energize circuits one at a time, monitoring current draw and watching for E11. The circuit that triggers the fault may have a short or excessive load.
  • Check for short circuits: On the suspect circuit, inspect wiring, outlets, and connected appliances for damage or water intrusion. Repair any faults before reconnecting.
  • Verify main breaker rating: Ensure the generator main breaker matches the generator's rated output. Replace a weak or nuisance‑tripping breaker with a DuroMax‑specified breaker of the correct rating.
  • Alternator inspection: If E11 occurs even with no external load, the alternator may have an internal short. Have a technician perform current and insulation tests and replace the alternator assembly if needed.
