Possible Causes
Lean fuel mixture from vacuum leak, Fouled spark plug, Incorrect ignition timing, Sticking intake or exhaust valve
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the generator, disconnect battery negative, and allow the exhaust to cool before working near it.
- Inspect spark plug: Remove and examine the plug. Clean or replace if fouled and set the correct gap.
- Check for vacuum leaks: Spray carburetor cleaner around the intake manifold and carburetor base while the engine is running (short test). A change in RPM indicates a leak that must be sealed or the gasket replaced.
- Fuel quality: Drain old fuel and refill with fresh gasoline or ensure proper LPG/NG pressure.
- Valve issues: Persistent backfiring may indicate valve problems. Have a technician perform a compression test and valve clearance adjustment.
