Possible Causes
Loose fuel fittings, Leaking fuel injector (EFI), Rich carburetor mixture, Cracked fuel tank or sending unit seal
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Shut down the generator, close fuel supply, disconnect battery negative, and ventilate the area thoroughly.
- Inspect fuel lines and fittings: Run your hand (with gloves) along hoses and fittings to feel for wet spots. Tighten loose clamps and fittings.
- Check tank and cap: Look for cracks in the fuel tank and ensure the cap seal is intact. Replace a damaged cap or tank.
- Observe exhaust: If black smoke is present, the engine may be running rich. Clean or replace the air filter and check choke operation.
- EFI systems: For fuel‑injected models, a leaking injector or rail seal may be the source. This should be diagnosed and repaired by a qualified technician.
