Possible Causes

Blocked cooling air flow, Low coolant level (liquid‑cooled models), Faulty engine temperature sensor, Inoperative cooling fan or radiator fan relay

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn the generator OFF, disconnect the battery, and allow the engine to cool for at least 30 minutes before touching any engine or exhaust components.

  • Check airflow: Inspect the generator enclosure louvers and intake/exhaust vents for leaves, dust, snow, or debris. Clear all obstructions and ensure at least the minimum clearance around the unit specified by DuroStar.
  • Inspect cooling fan: On air‑cooled models, remove the side panel and verify that the flywheel fan and any auxiliary cooling fans spin freely and are not obstructed. Replace damaged fan blades or shrouds.
  • Check coolant (liquid‑cooled): With the engine cold, remove the radiator cap and verify coolant is at the proper level. Top up with the recommended coolant mix. Inspect hoses and the radiator for leaks.
  • Verify fan operation: Start the unit and observe whether the electric radiator fan (if equipped) engages as temperature rises. If not, test the fan relay and fan motor for power and continuity. Replace faulty components.
  • Test temperature sensor: Locate the engine temperature sensor on the cylinder head or thermostat housing. Check the connector for corrosion. Use a multimeter to verify resistance changes with temperature (compare to service specs). Replace the sensor if readings are out of range.
  • Reset and monitor: Clear the E02 code, restart the generator with no load, and monitor temperature and fan operation. If overheating persists, stop the unit and contact a technician to check for internal cooling passage blockages or head gasket issues.
