Safety first: Turn OFF the generator, disconnect the battery, and ensure all loads are disconnected from the transfer switch or output lugs.

• Remove all loads: Make sure the automatic transfer switch is in utility position or all manual loads are disconnected. Restart the generator with no load to see if it stabilizes.
• Inspect governor linkage: Locate the governor arm and linkage on the throttle body or carburetor. Check for rust, dirt, or binding. Clean with a non‑residue spray and ensure the linkage moves freely through its full range.
• Check throttle plate: Verify the throttle plate is not sticking due to carbon buildup. Clean the throttle body with appropriate cleaner if necessary.
• Verify engine speed setting: Using a frequency meter or multimeter with Hz function, measure output frequency at the generator terminals. It should be near 60 Hz at rated speed. If significantly low or high, adjust the governor per the DuroStar service manual. Do not over‑rev the engine.
• Inspect speed sensor: Some models use a magnetic pickup or crankshaft position sensor for speed feedback. Check the sensor gap and wiring. Replace the engine speed sensor if damaged or if the controller logs intermittent speed signal loss.
• Retest under light load: After adjustments, apply a small load (e.g., 25% rated) and verify frequency remains stable. If E05 recurs, the control board or governor actuator may require professional diagnosis.
