Possible Causes

Fuel tank nearly empty, Stuck or faulty fuel level sensor, Wiring issue between fuel sender and controller, Incorrect fuel level calibration

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF the generator and allow it to cool. No open flames or sparks near the fuel tank.

  • Confirm fuel level: Visually inspect the fuel tank if possible or use a dipstick to verify actual fuel level. Refill with the correct fuel type (gasoline, diesel, or LP per model) to at least 50% capacity.
  • Reset and test: After refueling, clear the E09 code and attempt a manual start. If the unit runs normally and the gauge now reads correctly, monitor for recurrence.
  • Inspect fuel level sender: Access the top of the fuel tank and locate the fuel level sending unit. Check the connector for corrosion or loose pins. Clean and reseat the connector.
  • Test sender resistance: Disconnect the sender and measure resistance across its terminals while manually moving the float (if accessible). Compare readings to DuroStar specifications. Replace the fuel level sensor if readings are erratic or open.
  • Check wiring to controller: Trace the harness from the sender to the control panel for damage or pinched sections. Repair as needed.
  • Recalibrate (if supported): Some controllers allow fuel level calibration. Follow the manual to recalibrate the gauge after installing a new sender.
